Nigeria’s political terrain is undergoing renewed shifts as two serving governors elected on opposition platforms are preparing to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress, a move seen as an early sign of political positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The anticipated defections involve Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State.
Their planned defections highlight growing uncertainty within opposition parties as key political figures reassess their future ahead of the next election cycle.
The moves are already affecting politics at the state level, with party leaders, lawmakers, and grassroots supporters adjusting to the changing political landscape.
In Kano State, Yusuf’s expected return to the APC follows his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a decision that has triggered significant defections, including members of the State House of Assembly, eight federal lawmakers, and all 44 local government chairmen.
Yusuf’s media aide, Bature Tofa, said the governor’s decision was based on his political background and his belief that the APC offers a more stable platform for governance and political cooperation.
In Plateau State, preparations are underway for a formal event in Jos on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, where Governor Caleb Mutfwang is expected to be officially welcomed into the APC.
The event is expected to attract top APC leaders, including the party’s National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, several governors, ministers, and other senior party officials.
According to the Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, Sir Joseph Ari, arrangements have been completed for what he described as a historic occasion that will place Jos at the centre of national political attention.
