Amnesty International Nigeria has demanded urgent accountability from the Department of State Services over allegations that one of its operatives was involved in the fatal shooting of two men in Abuja.
The organisation said allegations of unlawful killings by security personnel continue to erode public confidence in agencies mandated to safeguard citizens, stressing that failure to act decisively would further entrench a culture of impunity.
It insisted that any officer implicated in abuses must face an independent and transparent investigation, noting that justice for victims remains essential to restoring trust between communities and security institutions.
The rights group said the incident occurred on January 19, 2026, in the Karmajiji community of the Federal Capital Territory, identifying the DSS personnel involved as Ajayi Abayomi, according to a statement shared on its official Facebook account.
Amnesty said one of the victims, Musa Adamu, died hours after the shooting, while the second, Suleiman Salisu, later succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, January 28, at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, where he had been receiving treatment.
Describing the incident, Amnesty said it was “yet another indication of reckless and unlawful use of firearms and abuse of power by security personnel,” adding that “this gross violation of human rights must not be swept under the carpet.”
The organisation recalled a previous case on September 7, 2023, when a DSS operative reportedly killed a fashion designer at Garki International Market, Abuja, during an altercation linked to a personal dispute involving the operative’s girlfriend.
Amnesty further warned of what it described as a growing pattern of security personnel intervening in civil and commercial disagreements, urging authorities to end impunity, enforce the rule of law and ensure that security agencies operate strictly within their legal mandates while respecting human rights.
