Akwa Ibom commissioner resigns after governor joins APC

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Special Duties, Ini Ememobong, has stepped down from the State Executive Council, voluntarily vacating his office in line with his principles and long-standing opposition to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Ememobong’s resignation came barely six hours after Governor Umo Eno defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

The commissioner’s exit was prompted by a statement made by Eno last week, warning members of his cabinet to either join him in the APC or resign their positions.

He tendered his resignation on Friday, citing the governor’s directive that any appointee unwilling to follow him in his new political journey should honorably step aside.

In his resignation letter titled “Behold Another Bend”, Ememobong emphasized that while he respects Governor Eno’s personal political decisions, his own principles and long-standing opposition to the APC made it impossible for him to join.

“While I cannot question or fault the Governor’s personal decision, I am unable to join in that sojourn. My decision is borne out of my belief in politics with principles and my long-standing opposition to that political platform, which is daily validated by numerous Nigerians across many sectors,” he said.

Ememobong expressed gratitude to the governor, whom he described as a brother and a leader who placed immense trust in him by assigning him to two strategic portfolios, Information and Special Duties, as well as the Ibom Deep Sea Port project.

“I have and will continue to have tremendous respect for His Excellency Governor Umo Eno, even outside EXCO,” he added.

He also extended appreciation to former Governor Udom Emmanuel, under whose administration he first joined the State Executive Council, lauding Emmanuel’s enduring support and belief in his capacity to serve.

Ememobong acknowledged that his resignation may not please everyone but appealed for understanding, reaffirming his commitment to remain true to his convictions.

“I understand this decision may not please everyone, and to those who are disappointed, I humbly seek your understanding,” he added.
