Akpabio calls emergency Senate meeting over electoral bill backlash

By Marycelia Agim

Following increasing public calls for mandatory electronic transmission of results, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has directed lamakers to reconvene for an emergency plenary on Tuesday, February 10, to advance the amendment of the Electoral Act.

Lawmakers had previously suspended plenary for a two-week recess after approving revisions to the Electoral Act, allowing committees to consult ministries, departments, and agencies on their 2026 budget proposals.

The sudden recall interrupts that recess and shifts renewed attention to the disputed provisions of the election legislation.

Public debate over the amendment has intensified, with political organizations, activists, and civic groups calling on parliament to reconsider the contested clause.

Some campaigners have announced plans to demonstrate at the National Assembly, while a coalition operating under the banner Enough is Enough has begun mobilizing supporters online using the hashtag #OccupyNASS.

Details of the reconvening were outlined in an internal notice dated 8 February, distributed to all members of the chamber.

The memo, endorsed by Clerk of the Senate Emmanuel Odo on the instruction of Senate President, urged full attendance and acknowledged the disruption caused by the sudden arrangement.

According to the notice, “I am directed by His Excellency, the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, to inform all Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that an Emergency Sitting of the Senate has been scheduled as follows: Date: Tuesday, 10th February 2026, Time: 12:00 Noon, Venue: Senate Chamber.

“Distinguished Senators are kindly requested to note this Emergency Sitting date and attend. All inconveniences this may cause are highly regretted.
