Nigerian footballer, Ahmed Musa, has announced his retirement from the Super Eagles at age 32.
Musa announced his retirement in a statement released on social media reflecting his journey and pride in representing the country on the soccer pitch which he described as a huge honour and pride in his career.
The forward, who had 111 appearances for the male national team in his 15 year tenure, stated that after a long thought, he decided to bow out of the team, but still remains a lifelong fan having also represented the country at the u-20, 23 age grade teams.
He spoke more on his departure in a released statement on Wednesday which reads, ”I was a young boy when the journey started. I remember being invited at the same time to the u-20, u-23 and the Super Eagles.
”I was still learning and was travelling, but I never complained. Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up and played 111 matches for the team,” he continued.
”To become the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football is a great honour. ”
Musa, who scored 16 goals as a Super Eagles player stressed on the highlights of his country side career which included winning the 2013 African Cup of Nations. He said, ‘Winning the 2013 AFCON will always stand out. That team showed what it meant to play for Nigeria.
”Scoring at the World Cup against Argentine and Iceland are memories I will always carry with me. To score four goals at the World Cup and be Nigeria’s highest goalscorer on that stage is something I am truly grateful for,” he added.
”Once an Eagle, always an Eagle,” he concluded.
