In a bold move to reinforce public safety and eliminate criminal activity, operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police have arrested 78 hoodlums terrorizing residents across Abuja.
The suspects were apprehended in various locations identified as hotspots through resident’s complaints and security intelligence gathered in the area.
Mostly young men, the suspects were caught during a coordinated sting operation targeting black spots and criminal hideouts across the seat of power.
Key locations covered during the exercise included Jikwoyi, Apo, Nyanya, Karu, Wuse, Kubwa, Dutse-Alhaji, Mpape, Karmo, Utako, and Kurudu.
According to police sources, many suspects were found loitering suspiciously around unfinished buildings and isolated spots before being apprehended.
Some were allegedly caught in possession of substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other incriminating items.
“These areas have become notorious for petty theft, drug-related activities, and assaults. Our goal is to deny these criminals any sanctuary within the city,” said a senior officer involved in the operation.
“The suspects are currently undergoing screening and profiling. Those found guilty will be prosecuted accordingly. Anyone found innocent will be released after the screening process,” the source added.
With law enforcement stepping up efforts to curb crime across the FCT, residents in affected communities say the development has restored their sense of safety.
“We’ve been living in fear,” said one resident, a trader in Karu. “These abandoned buildings have become hideouts for criminals. We’re happy the police are taking action.”
