The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja has recorded the registration of 10,000 ‘Go Cashless’ cards following the enforcement of a nationwide no-cash toll policy, as authorities defend the transition amid recent traffic congestion.
Airport Manager Ahmed Danjuma said the figure reflects growing compliance by motorists, despite initial disruptions that followed the strict rollout of the directive.
He attributed the gridlock witnessed at the toll gate to delayed registration by many users, noting that awareness campaigns had been conducted well before enforcement began.
Danjuma disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during an interview, explaining that although enrolment started in August 2025, a large number of travellers failed to obtain their Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria cards ahead of implementation.
“Since March 1, we have gone cashless in line with the policy of this government to eliminate the collection of cash at toll gates. The move aligns with the federal government’s broader reforms,” he said, adding that the initiative is designed to boost accountability and revenue efficiency.
He further stated, “We have been announcing it before now for airport users to get their FAAN cards, so that when you get to the gate, you just tap and the barrier opens. Now, If you go to any FAAN gate and you want to pay cash, you will be disappointed because nobody will allow you to pass through.”
According to him, the early setbacks were largely due to last-minute adjustments by motorists, expressing confidence that traffic flow would stabilise as more users secure their payment cards and adapt to the automated system.
