A 96-year-old woman, identified as Habiba Ado, has been confirmed dead after falling into a toilet pit in Sarai Village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State.
Ado, said to had been suffering from mental illness, reportedly slipped while attempting to use the facility at her residence.
Her body was recovered by the Kano State Fire and Rescue Service days after residents discovered she had been trapped in the pit.
It was reported that Usman Adamu, an occupant of the building, discovered Ado had fallen into the pit and immediately called emergency services for assistance.
In a statement issued on Friday, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Saminu Abdullahi said the rescue team, under the leadership of Director Sani Anas, retrieved Ado unconscious, but she later died.
He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged residents to prioritize safety in their surroundings.
The remains of the woman were handed over to the ward head, while residents were advised to ensure that open toilet pits are properly covered to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
